Ten digital marketing trends Canadian businesses should act on in 2026

Trend lists are usually written to sound exciting. This one is written to be useful: ten shifts we see in client data, each paired with one thing to do about it.

Digital marketing trends for 2026

Every January brings a wave of predictions, most of them too vague to act on. We have tried to do something different: list the changes we actually see in the accounts we manage for Canadian businesses, and pair each with one concrete action.

Some are large structural shifts. Some are small habits that are quietly paying off. All of them apply to small and mid-sized businesses, not only to brands with national budgets.

1. AI answers sit above the links

More searches now show an AI summary before any website. Pages that answer questions clearly and specifically are the ones those summaries draw on, and the ones people click when they want more. Action: add plain answers about price, process, timing and service area to every service page.

2. Local searches often end in Maps

Many people call, get directions or read reviews straight from the map results without visiting a website. Action: treat your Google Business Profile as a second homepage, with complete services, fresh photos and replies to every review.

Content that feels real wins

3. Short, plain video from real people

Simple phone videos of owners and staff explaining things are outperforming polished brand content for many small businesses. Action: film one short answer to a customer question every week.

4. Social platforms double as search engines

Younger customers in particular search TikTok, Instagram and YouTube for recommendations. Action: use the words your customers type in captions, on-screen text and what you say aloud.

Data gets scarcer, and more valuable

5. Consent-first measurement

Privacy rules, including Quebec’s Law 25, and browser limits mean less complete tracking. Action: set up a proper consent banner and make sure your analytics still captures what people agree to share.

6. Your own data feeds the ad platforms

Ad platforms perform better when they know which leads became customers. Action: record outcomes in your CRM and send closed deals back to Google and Meta.

Automation reaches the small business

7. AI in everyday marketing work

Drafting, editing, summarising calls and reports: AI now saves real hours in small teams. Action: pick two repetitive tasks and build a simple AI-assisted routine for each, with a person reviewing the output.

8. Speed to lead as a competitive edge

Automatic text replies to missed calls, instant confirmations and online booking are becoming standard. Action: measure how long your leads wait today, then cut that time in half.

Trust becomes the scarce resource

9. Reviews carry more weight than ever

With so much generated content around, recent reviews from real customers stand out. Action: ask every happy customer for a review within a day, with a direct link.

10. Owned audiences over rented reach

Platform rules change without warning, as Canadians saw when news disappeared from Facebook and Instagram in 2023. Action: grow an email list with proper CASL consent and a website that ranks on its own.

What to do this quarter

Do not try to act on all ten. Choose the three that address your biggest weakness today. For most local businesses that means the Business Profile, reviews and speed to lead. For businesses running ads, add conversion data. For those investing in content, start with answer-ready service pages.

Trends matter only when they change what you do on Monday morning.

If you would like help choosing, our monthly marketing plans start with exactly this kind of prioritisation.

Questions about 2026 marketing trends

Ask a strategist
What is the biggest digital marketing trend in 2026?

For most businesses, the shift toward AI-assisted search and answers. It rewards websites and profiles that answer real questions clearly, and it changes how people discover local businesses.

Are these trends relevant for small businesses?

Yes. Most of them, such as reviews, Business Profiles, short video, fast follow-up and first-party data, are cheap to act on and matter more for small businesses than large ones.

How should a small business prioritise marketing trends?

Pick the two or three that address your current biggest weakness, act on them properly and measure the effect before adding more. Chasing every trend at once rarely works.
